By David MarksI have used Norelco shavers for decades and for some reason I recently decided to buy their expensive 1255X (3D) model. I happened to buy it at Costco, primarily because of the price and because I knew I could return it even after a 30 day trial.
And I reviewed that expensive version, then updated it after testing this much cheaper AT790 version, lowering my rating to two stars on the 3D model.
This "cheap" AT790 is in reality a far better shaver than the 1255X ($49.95 versus $215.00 for the two models, here on Amazon). The AT790/40 is one GEM of a shaver, and it is generally better at all aspects of shaving than the 1255X. Even though this AT790 is still based on the earlier design, it shaves better and faster than the 1255X, its trimmer is improved and is noticeably better than that of the more expensive model, it is lighter weight and easier to handle and maneuver, it is simply a much better shaver, at a MUCH lower price.
My gosh, you can buy two of these AT790s here on Amazon, for a total cost of just under $100, or you can buy one of the 1255X/3D shavers for $215. This means that for less than HALF what the 1255X costs, you can have a great shaver PLUS a complete backup (blades and all).
Furthermore, you can use the second shaver at work, in your car, in another bathroom, etc. This is the first time I've had the chance here on Amazon, to recommend you buy two of a product, versus buying one of a more expensive version, and still pay less than half the price of one of the more expensive versions.
This isn't even a close race, and I have absolutely no idea what Norelco is doing here, with their expensive "3D" models. They are outrageously priced and they outrageously underperform the much cheaper and lighter AT790.
